Many universities in Japan have maintained the provision of educational opportunities through a mix of face-to-face, online, and hybrid classes. However, what has been revealed by these endeavors is the change in the tide of college education that had already occurred before the pandemic. Since the beginning of the 21st century, ICT has developed rapidly, making it possible to transmit knowledge beyond the constraints of space and time. There is a demand for a shift from knowledge transfer style education to education that nurtures practical knowledge in the real world. In order to respond to such changes, we have developed the "Kandai-style Experiential Learning Programs(K-ELP)" since 2013, which focuses on project-based learning in collaboration with local people. Taking into consideration the changes in the educational environment due to the coronavirus pandemic, we further developed this K-ELP as a new environmental education program in collaboration with people in Sakai City and Tanabe City. Funded by the 2019-2020 Kansai University Education and Research Advancement Promotion Fund, the new direction of the K-ELP has been explored both in theory and in practice. Specifically, we examine the pedagogical goal of experiential education and propose the phronesis in Aristotle's trinity of knowledge as a learning goal for college education, and project-based learning methods that promote learning in the community. Finally, we illustrate a new environmental education project which focuses on "diversity" and "reciprocity" as guidelines for practicing cooperation with local communities to solve common global issues to achieve the SDGs.

International academic conferenceMethodological Issues in Describing the Experiences of Qigong: a first-person approach based on the philosophy of Eugene GendlinUnrefereedOtherMURAKAWA,HaruhikoThe Circle in Phenomenology of Religious Experience2016/11/4～The Circle in Phenomenology of Religious ExperienceIn this paper, I will examine some methodological issues to describe the first-person experiences of religious and spiritual practices, i.e., “qigong”, a Chinese traditional practice based on qi metaphysics. Recent development of various qualitative research methods in human sciences including phenomenological psychology provides us with the systematic procedures to examine such “first-person experiences.” However, most of those endeavors are still naïve in terms of the division of language and experience, in their actual procedure of interviewing, analyzing, and describing, and resulted in poor description, either a mere repetition of metaphysical textbooks or reduction of experiences to scientific explanations. For this matter, I would propose a first-person approach based on the philosophy and practice of Eugene Gendlin, which contain three methodologically controversial points: 1) taking such religious experiences as not contents but a flow, which Gendlin called experiencing, 2) creating new meaning out of the flow of experience, 3) feeling as an anchor for any step of research procedure, which in Gendlin’s view is not consciousness, emotion nor sensation, but rather as Befindlichkeit, a mode of being-in-the-world. I will discuss these points, with some experiential descriptions from the interview with qigong practitioners.

ThesesPhenomenology of the Experience of Qigong; A Preliminary Research Design for the Intentional Bodily PracticesOtherSingle-AuthorHaruhiko Murakawa;;Ph.D Dissertation submited to the California Institute of Integral Studies2002/12～EnglishThis study provides an experiential ground for exploring the significance of qigong as an intentional bodily practice and presents a "physiological and organic knowledge of the body" based on the metaphor of "the body as a flow of qi." This project is situated within the context of increasing interest in the body in academia, in which the Cartesian dichotomy of the body and mind is a problematic issue. In order to overcome such a dichotomy, this study proposes the significance of exploring the intentionally chosen bodily practices, and takes qigong as an example. Then, discussing some theoretical issues of body image and body schema, as well as enactive metaphor, this study also proposes a research agenda to investigate such bodily practices, based on the phenomenology of the body by Elizabeth Behnke and the philosophy of language and experience developed by Eugene T. Gendlin.
