PapersThe Crisis of Japanese Pop Music and Japan's Economic StagnationUnrefereedIn-house publicationSingle-AuthorTAKAMASU,Akira2015/10/31~Japanese popular music (J-Pop) is currently facing a critical situation. After having reached a peak of JPY 600 billion in 1998, sales have dropped steadily throught the present day. The crisis exists in a quantitative as well as a qualitative aspect. The same types of songs are ranked in the hit-charts and J-Pop songs are produced to be salable only in the Japnese market. They deviate from global trends in popular music. In this article, we analyze how this music industry crisis developed and how it can be solved. We consider factors that drove the crisis by focusing on the economic stagnation and changes in the economic characteristics of music goods. As the policies that can rescue J-Pop from the crisis, we propose the possibility of indie records companies that the artists can establish by themselves as well as suggest government intervention in the music industries through taxes and subsideies. In the final section, we summarize the implications of this article and refer to the current state of the music markets in the US, China, and South Korea.
PapersJapan’s Dilemma: Why has Japan’s economy stagnated since the 1990s?UnrefereedIn-house publicationSingle-AuthorTAKAMASU,Akira2014/3/31~This article analyzes the reason why Japan has not escaped economic stagnation since the collapse of the bubble economy at the beginning of the 1990s. In its first section, we show that the middle class was formed through an egalitarian income distribution system after World War Ⅱ and that the consumption of the middle class made rapid economic growth possible. However, this pattern of economic growth gradually disappeared in the 1990s, and the disparity of income distribution increased, which is the main reason of Japan's economic stagnation. We also point out that the propensity to consume of the wealthy is relatively small in Japan, making stagnation more serious. In the last section, we examine the Abenomics and demonstrate that it will not be effective, unless the problem of the income disparity is solved

PapersThe Effects of the TPP on Agricultural Production in Japan and China -A Computer Simulation Analysis using the GTAP model-UnrefereedIn-house publicationCo-authorTAKAMASU,Akira2012/3/31~In this article, we conduct some computer simulations using the GTAP model to estimate how theeconomies of Japan, China and other East-Asian countries will be affected if they participate in the TPP. The Japanese government announced only one result of the simulations, namely that Japan’s GDP would increase by 0.48 to 0.65 % in October 2010. However it has not given other details of the simulations, especially how the individual sectors including agricultural products will be affected. We will show, using the computer simulations that the agricultural production in Japan will be fatally damaged if Japan participates in the TPP. We also examine the current situation of the agricultural productions in Japan and China.
