However, when visitors see the artifacts at the exhibition hall, the information of relevant other artifacts is not provided on the spot. In this study, we propose the method to provide visitors with the information of artifacts related to each other by using classification codes included in HRAF, an ethnographic and cultural anthropology database.

Our research will be positioned as a case study to construct an electronic guide system in museums and to explore the method of providing information by the system from the viewpoint of human-centered design (HCD). We have adopted a research method known as ethnography for grasping the needs of visitors. In this paper, we will provide a design example to contribute to support the visitors.

PapersBehavior Analysis of Museum visitors by Ethnographic ApproachIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authoredIWATANI, Hirohumi;MOTOMURA, Yasunoriethnography;human centered design;behavior observation;contextual inquiry2017/12/2~IPSJ SIG Computers and the HumanitiesOsaka City UniversityIn recent years, some museums provide for visitors the service using electronic guide system through compact mobile information terminals, for the purpose of supporting their browsing exhibits. In that case it is desirable that adequate information is suitably provided in accordance with the visitor’s obvious or potential needs. Our research will be positioned as a case study to construct an electronic guide system in museums and to explore the method of providing information by the system from the viewpoint of human-centered design (HCD).We adopted a research method known as ethnography for grasping the needs of visitors, mainly conducted behavior observation and contextual inquiry for visitors, and we tried to understand the behavior of visitors. In this paper we will organize and consider the findings and issues obtained based on such surveys.

PapersOn the Information System that Provides Continuous Support for the Preparation of Graduation Thesis: its Analysis and DesignUnrefereedAcademic JournalCo-authorYasunori MOTOMURA;Yasuhiro UEKI;Masahiko Fuyuki;IPSJ SIG Technical Report2010/12/9~This paper describes the information system that is called “SOTSURON Card” ― a graduation thesis card― which provides continuous support for a student writing a
graduation thesis. First of all, we collect user data, and analyze the data to identify the requirements to develop the system. The function and the user interface are designed
based on the requirements. The feature of this system is to provide a user interface that helps to classify and accumulate the data transmitted by e-mail to the system. The ultimate goal of this user interface, therefore, is to support a student writing a graduation thesis on the one hand, and teachers offering guidance to the students on the other.

On this digital workbench, the flexible reinterpretability of the data was accomplished by referring to the normalized data stored in the digital archives. Through this examination, we found the data were made reinterpretable, reconstructive, and objective on the workbench.

PapersIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorMOTOMURA Yasunori;;;;;2004/12/9~As the feasibility study of the digital archives for the anthropological field studies, the data model construction for the system applied to wide range of data is examined according to the cultural anthropological needs. By treating the compound data generated with reference to data with the original data in the archive, data may ripen on the system and, so to speak, ”data culturing” is realized.

However, no concrete methods for evaluating the researchers' interpretations seem to have been established. As one of the solutions to this problem, the authors have established a digital archives system to be utilized as a workbench for the researches in these fields. The system enables the general users to append the comments, interpretations, etc., in a subjective manner, to the original objective data provided by the researchers. By adopting this system, the construction of the ethnography reflecting various viewpoints, including those of the members of the target culture/society, could be expected.Kansai University Grant-in-Aid for the Faculty Joint Research Program 20020401-20030331

Academic presentationSupervised texture segmentation algorithm using overcomplete wavelet transformCo-authorMOTOMURA Yasunori;1997~This paper describes a supervised texture image segmentation algorithm based on wavelet transform. a small moving window is used to extract the texture energy feature images from the detailed images transformed by an overcomplete wavelet frame, Then, a quadrant filtering method under consideration of contextual, spatial information is adopted to smooth the feature images to reduce variability of noise. A Bayes classifier is used to make initial probabilistic labels and a probabilistic relaxation method is used to obtain a better result of texture segmentation. The experiments prove that this algorithm has a fair excellent segmentation performance.
