Research Activities
- I have been working on the curriculum problems of the physical education at university as my extended theme. And presently I'm reserching the relation between longterm sports and health, analyzing physical exercise from the physiological point of view.

-A Study of its Techniques, kick and pass-UnrefereedIn-house publicationSingle-AuthorZAKO Tetsuo;Keri;Tsuki;Nippon Kempo;2002/1/31~The purpose of this study is analyse the Kobushi(fist) no waza and Keri(kick) waza of Nippon Kempo, considering the technical character of this martial art. The kamae as a starting position for these wazas has a great influence on the following performances. In Kamae-position the both feet are put about the breadth of the shoulder apart, the knees are bent slightly, the back leg is put on an angle of 45 degrees to the front one. This Hanmin no kamae(Half-body posture) gives the rotational power of waist and works as the basis to Kobushi no waza, Keri waza, and other defensive wazas like Uke waza and Kawashi waza.

PapersIn-house publicationCo-authorZAKO,Tetsuo;Bulletin of the general education center of Kansai University1996/9/30~We examined the heart rate of 63 athletes at Kansai University and classified them into three groups :
1. Martial artists who work with bare hands like karate, kempo and boxing, 2. Martial artists who work with instruments like kendo and naginata, 3. Athletes who play ball games auch as soccer, basket ball, rugby, and table tennis. Those who did karate had the lowest heart rate of all martial artists. Kendo training proved to activate the circulatory system. The table tennis players recorded the lowest heart rate in comparison with the other ball game players which means that this sport is appropriate for people of all ages.

And the same things were checked one year thereafter to compare the data results. The examination showed a big improvement in all points in Kempo players. With the ordinary students physical strength and flexibility tended to decrease.

We took the answers concerning problems with curriculum and classified them into groups of departments which held their own meetings on a regular basis and departments which held no meetings at all. Results showed that 47% of the departments hold no meetings and do not have the intention of extending credits for physical education.

PapersIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorZAKO,Tetsuo;Kansai Society of Sports medicine and Science1991/11/30~Long-term training in sports causes some morphological changes like auxocardia and some functional changes such as decreases in output and blood pressure. Skilled athletes have what is called an “athletic heart". We recently examined the urine, blood pressure and ECG heart rate on 150 University athletes. Bradycardia was found in distance runners, rowers and Nippon Kempo players.

PapersIncidence of ECG Abnormalities at Rest in University Rugby and Nippon Kempo Players.UnrefereedIn-house publicationCo-authorZAKO Tetsuo;Bulletin of Osaka College of Physical Education1991/8/30~We recently performed the ECG at rest in 102 Rugby players and 99 Nippon Kempo players to compare the incidence of RCG abnormalities. The tendency for mild bradycardia and sinus arrhythmia were higher in the Rugby players than in the Nippon Kempo players. R and T waves in the Nippon Kempo players were low and some of them had signs of myocardinal fatigue such as a flat T wave
PapersHolter ECG Study of Heart Rate and other Parameters in University Rugby and Nippon Kempo players during sleep at Training Camps.UnrefereedIn-house publicationCo-authorZAKO Tetsuo;Bulletin of Osaka College of Physical Education1991/8/30~We performed a continuous Holter ECG during sleep at night for 4 days in 8 Rugby player and 8 Nippon Kempo players at a training camp to examine the heart rate over time during sleep and to detect any ECG abnormalities. The mean heart rate during the study period was lower in the Rugby players than in the Nippon Kempo players, and some of the ECG abnormalities detected during sleep included sinus arrhythmia, pace marker dislocation, supraventricular extrasytole, ventricular extrasystole and second degree A-V block. In the Rugby players three abnormalities appeared sporadically and two Nippon Kempo players showed continuous ventricular extrasystole.

Similar measurements are made on some of these students one year thereafter. The results were examined between two groups, athletes and non-athletes.
PapersHolter ECG Study of Heart Rate and other Parameters of Rugby and Nippon Kempo players during sleepIn refereedOtherSingle-AuthorZAKO Tetsuo;master's thesis1990/3/31~We examined the ECG of 102 Rugby players and 99 Nippon Kempo players intentionally at rest in order to observe how the process of improving one's skill in sports influences the circulatory system. Furthermore we performed the ECG on these athletes while they were asleep in order to study any changes in the heart rate in time and to detect any ECG abnormalities. As a result we found abnormalities in the ECG of 47.06% of the Rugby players and 41.01% of the Nippon Kempo Players. The ECG heart rate decreased with time during sleep and was lowest 2 ? 3 hours before awakening.
