The AFLEF can fix any work and position the fixed work at short range. In this paper, the 2-dimensional AFLEF is proposed as the simplified type and is provided with passive RCC function to be equipped with dexterity for a peg-in-hole task. As results of the experiment on the peg-in-hole task on the X-band accelerator disks with the AFLEF, we make the ability of the AFLEF for the task clear and also the boundary conditions to the complete task clear.

PapersDevelopment of Silicon Micro Multi-edged Tool Using Anisotropic Etching (2nd Report) Evaluation of Machining Performance for the Micro Tool and Manufacturing of Prototype Milli-sized Cutting DeviceIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorTomomi YAMAGUCHI;Masahiro HIGUCHI;Shoichi SHIMADA;Akiyuki NISHIZAWAJournal of the Japan Society for Precision EngineeringVol. 70, No. 10, pp. 1276-12802004/10~This paper describes the evaluation of machining performance for the developed micro multi-edged tool and a prototype of new cutting device by using it for plane machining. This tool is like a grinding stone and consists of micro pyramidal hillocks, which are about a few hundred nanometers tall and formed on the wet anisotropic etching in the silicon fabrication process. Though it is expected to machine aluminum alloy, glass and so on, there is a problem that is the requirement of surface contact between a material and the tool in plane machining. The developed prototype of cutting device is equipped with a new mechanism to solve this problem. In the plane machining of Al-Mg alloy by using this device, the cutting performance of micro multi-edged tool has been evaluated and it has become clear that the tool has the machining performance as well as superfinishing by using an grinding stone with superfine grains.”High-Tech Research Center” Project 20000401-20050331

PapersDevelopment of Silicon Micro Multi-edged Tool Using Anisotropic Etching (1st Report) Construction of Design System for Fabricating the Silicon Micro Multi-edged ToolIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorTomomi YAMAGUCHI;Masahiro HIGUCHI;Shoichi SHIMADA;Shinya KATO;Kunihiko ASAIJournal of the Japan Society for Precision EngineeringVol. 70, No. 9, pp. 1196-12002004/9~This paper proposes a micro multi-edged tool made of silicon as a new tool in the micro/nano-cutting and the decision system of fabricating conditions to the tool. This new tool is expected to machine a softer material, like aluminum alloy, glass and so on, than iron because silicon is as hard as alloy tool steel and high speed tool steel. On this new tool, the pyramidal etch hillocks on Si (100) surfaces etched in aqueous KOH solution function as cutting edges because the shape and distribution of the hillocks are resemble to those of the cutting edges on grinding wheel surfaces. The multi-edged tool can be fabricated at the desire of user by only adjusting the etching conditions suitably because the topography of hillocks depends on them. Therefore, we have developed the decision system of the etching conditions corresponding to a specified tool. In this system, the genetic algorithms and the neural network model are applied and the suitable etching conditions; - temperature, concentration and time - are output corresponding to the inputs of average height and number of the hillocks. In this paper, the system is proved fit for practical use as the result of experiments.”High-Tech Research Center” Project 20000401-20050331

PapersPeg-in-hole by Using a Fixture with Passive Compliance Function
(1st Report, Construction of Peg-in-hole Task Model by Using a Fixture with Passive RCC Function under Quasi-static Analysis)In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorTomomi YAMAGUCHI;Masahiro HIGUCHI;Akishige YANO;Kazumasa FUJITATransactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Series CVol. 68, No. 674, pp. 3115-3121, Series C,2002/10~This paper presents a new and effective assembly model by using a fixture with passive RCC function. Previously, in a peg-in-hole task, such functions for skillful assembly as RCC, contact force sensing and so on have been supplied to a ”peg-device” like a hand-manipulator, not a ”hole-device” like a fixture. Therefore the characteristics of a fixture with passive RCC function in this task is investigated in this paper. The peg-in-hole task model by using the ”RCC fixture” is constructed on vertical (x-z) plane. And the performance of this task is investigated by the quasi-static analysis, which was proposed by Whitney, to evaluate the characteristics of it. From the results of the analysis, it has been made clear that the RCC fixture has shown the insertion behavior unlike conventional RCC applied to a peg near the entrance of hole.

PapersDevelopment of Monitoring System of Machining Process by Using Frequency of Cutting/Machinery Sounds (1st Report)
(Construction of the System to Cutting Tool Conditions by Expression of Hexadecimal Spectrum Pattern (HSP))In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorTomomi YAMAGUCHI;Masahiro HIGUCHI;Akishige YANOTransactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Series CVol.68, No.668, pp.1254-1256, Series C2002/4~Machining sounds has been told to be effective for monitoring of cutting tool conditions, but it has been difficult to avoid misunderstanding of the conditions in previous systems. There are two main causes. First, the peculiar sound to a condition dose not emanate continuously and an unexpected sound emanates occasionally. Secondly, in case of tool wear, the small difference between normal tool and tool wear makes the recognition of the wear hard. We propose the HSP (Hexadecimal Spectrum Pattern) as the definite expression of the spectrum patterns in this paper. And we also propose the new monitoring system by using frequency of the sound, which is applied by neural network, because we consider that the emanating time of the peculiar sound is as important as the spectrum pattern of it to recognize the condition exactly. In this system, Cutting tool conditions, like normal, wear and fracturing, can be monitored without misunderstanding under a few cutting conditions.Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research

The outline is as follows. After a stone hardness and a preliminary drawing of stone topography which can be produced by the computer graphics called ”fractional Brownian motion” are assumed, the cutting performance is estimated from mathematical models. Such analysis reveals whether the topography and hardness of the stone are optimal or not. If the design fails, these steps are iterated. To find an optimized solution, genetic algorithms have been applied to the iterative design process. The developed GA-based design tool is called SUSDIN (Superfinishing Stone Design Inventor), and has proved fit for practical use as the result of experiments.

Although a lot of work has been done on the roughness of the mirror-finished surface, its inhomogeneous static structure is not yet well analyzed. This has led to attempt to discuss quantitatively whether the surface texture was indeed chaotic or not. In the paper, the trajectory on the attractor reconstructed in phase space from a measured surface profile was characterized by the Lyapunov exponent and the correlation dimension. The characterization shows that the mirror-finished surface has the strange attractor, the positive Lyapunov exponent and the finite correlation dimension and hence it has the chaotic characteristics. Further, the mirror-finished surface produced by the ultra-precision turning becomes more chaotic as the feed rate and the cutting speed decrease.Kansai University Special Research Fund 199704-199803
International academic conferenceEffect of Fixture with Passive Compliant Function in a Peg-in-hole TaskIn refereedOtherCo-authorTomomi YAMAGUCHI;Akishige YANO;Kazumasa FUJITAProceedings of 1998 Japan-U.S.A. Symposium on Flexible Automationpp. 1267-12741998/7~The Japan Association of Automatic Control Engineers & The Dynamic Systems and Control Division of ASMEThis paper presents a new assembly unit for practical passive compliant assembly system. Previously such functions for flexible and skillful assembly as passive compliant system are added to a hand-manipulator. But an assembly system is not made practical by this method because a hand or a manipulator become big and heavy. On the other hand, a fixture is permitted to be a little big and heavy. So a fixture is added with some parts of functions for flexible and skillful assembly, that is 'active functional fixture' is proposed as practical assembly unit. In this paper, the 'compliant fixture' having similar function of RCC device is considered. The effect of this proposed fixture is investigated by evaluating the performance of a peg-in-hole task theoretically. From the results of the analysis, it is clear that the compliant fixture has two advantages. The first one is the wide ranges of the compliance center's location in which the assembly unit shows good performances. The second one is the wedging-free/jamming-free operation throughout the insertion process, even though the size of the work and the friction are large. Due to these advantages, the proposed compliant fixture is suitable for the practical passive compliant assembly system.Kansai University Grant-in-Aid for the Faculty Joint Research Program 199704-199803

PapersForming Factors of Fractal Grinding Wheel TopographyIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorMasahiro HIGUCHI;Akishige YANO;Noboru YAMAMOTO;Tomomi YAMAGUCHI;Soichi SHIMOMACHImodelling;fractal;grinding wheelJournal of the Japan Society for Precission EngineeringVol. 63, No. 7, pp. 1028-10321997/7~This study has been done for the purpose of understanding the mechanism by which the grinding wheel topographies are formed. The irregularity of distribution of grain tips over the wheel surface and the complexity of their morphology can be characterized by the fractal dimensions. Therefore, it was investigated how the fractal dimensions correlated with the dressing parameters and the composition and properties of wheel themselves. Based on the experimental data, the models adequate to describe the mechanisms were built by the technique, which is called ”group method of data handling”. On the basis of the obtained models, the following conclusions could be drawn. (1) The dressing at bigger depth of cut on the harder-grade and more open wheel results in the increased morphological complexity of grain tips. (2) The finer dressing on the denser wheel results in the decreased irregularity of grain distribution.

Electric charge of the piezoelectric sensor was converted into voltage signal with charge amplifier. And then, in the developed method, a satisfactory measurement of the chip placement force was accomplished by compensation for the voltage signal. This compensation was based on an integral compensation for a transfer function of the charge amplifier. As a result, an effectuality of piezoelectric devices for mount force sensor was confirmed. And the endurance tests were put into practice. The result of the test was that well endurance characteristic was confirmed.

PapersFractal Characteristics of Grinding Wheel SurfaceIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorMasahiro HIGUCHI;Akishige YANO;Noboru YAMAMOTO;Tomomi YAMAGUCHI;Soichi SHIMOMACHIdistribution of cutting edges;fractal;grinding wheelJournal of the Japan Society for Precission EngineeringVol. 62, No. 7, pp. 979-9831996/7~A proper characterization of the topography of grinding wheel surface is very important for understanding grinding performances. The wheel topography which is comprised of the spatial distribution of abrasive grains over the wheel surface and their morphology suggests a fractal structure. Then fractal geometry which can produce a numerical description of an indescribably rugged surface was applied to characterize such a geometrical structure. It has quantitatively been evidenced by measured fractal dimensions that both the complexity of morphology of cutting edges and the irregularity of their distribution increase through dressing process. However, it has been indicated that the complexity of cutting edge's morphology decreases by wheel wears, such as attritious wear and grain fracture.
PapersDevelopment of a High Speed Non-circular Machining NC-lathe for Cutting a Piston-head of a Reciprocating Engine by Use of a New Servomechanism Actuated by Electromagnetic Attractive ForceIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorToshiro HIGUCHI;Tomomi YAMAGUCHI;Minoru TANAKAhigh speed servomechanism;electromagnetic attractive force;non-circular machining;NC-latheJournal of The Japan Society for Precission Engineering.Vol. 62, No. 3,pp. 453-4571996/3~This paper presents a new high speed and high precision NC-lathe for machining a piston-head of a reciprocating engine. In the machining of a piston-head, a cutting tool positioning servomechanism is needed, because the machining of a piston-head is the non-circular machining, in which the stroke of the cutting tool positioning is 0.1-0.5 mm. Previously a new servomechanism actuated by electromagnetic attractive force was developed as a cutting tool positioning mechanism. But a prototype of this servomechanism did not make a high speed non-circular machining possible, as the response performance was not at a satisfactory level. Thus, to enhance the response performance, the prototype has been redesigned with the use of some plate springs, the decrease in mass, the restraint of eddy-current loss and so on. Also the periodic learning control method with the inverse transfer function compensation has been applied to the positioning control for the high accurate positioning. These modifications lead the developed NC-lathe for a piston-head to the achievement of practical machining with an accuracy of 2 m at 3000 rpm.
PapersDevelopment of 3D-measuring System by Image Processing-Application to Dimensional Inspection of Small Molded Plastic Electronic Parts-In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorTomomi YAMAGUCHI;Hirokazu TANAKA;Yasuyuki KOGAdimensional inspection;laser microscope;image processing;three dimensional coordinate measuring machineJournal of The Japan Society for Precission Engineering.Vol. 62, No. 2, pp. 285-2891996/2~This paper presents a new automatic 3D-measuring system, using a developed three-dimensional coordinate measuring machine (3D-CMM) by two image processors (a CCD camera and laser microscope) and a workstation (WS), for the dimensional inspection during the production of small molded electronic parts. Generally, in the measurement of small molded electronic parts, a 3D-CMM by an image processor (CCD camera) is rather suitable than a 3D-CMM by a probe, because a probe may damage some portions and unable to enter narrow spaces. But it is less accurate in vertical direction than it is length and breadth directions. Also it takes much time to make a measuring program. So it is difficult for the system using only a 3D-CMM by an image processor to shorten the process time of the dimensional inspection. At this stand point, in the developed system, a confocal scanning laser microscope and a WS are appended to a 3D-CMM by an image processor to get the required vertical direction accuracy and to save the process time as much as possible. The former ensures the vertical accuracy, and the latter shortens the process time 45% than the previous one.

PapersDevelopment of a New High Speed Positioning Servomechanism by Electromagnetic Attractive ForceIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorToshiro HIGUCHI;Tomomi YAMAGUCHIJournal of the Japan Society for Precision EngineeringVol. 59, No. 10, pp. 1619-16241993/10~This paper presents a new high speed positioning servomechanism in order to machine an article with a non-circular profile. In the non-circular machining by a lathe, the positioning servomechanism of a cutting toll is necessary, and, in order to operate it with high efficiency, this positioning servomechanism must have the enough force to overwhelm cutting resistance and have a good responsiveness. Previously an electrohydraulic servomechanism was applied to the cutting tool positioning mechanism and the high efficient non-circular machining was realized. But there were some problems, such as the maintenance of oil, a noise, and so on in this mechanism. And so a new high speed and high power positioning servomechanism was developed. This new servomechanism is actuated by electromagnetic attractive force in the same as a support mechanism by an active magnetic bearing. Usual mechanical springs were incorporated into the fundamental servomechanism by the electromagnetic attractive force to achieve the high responsiveness on the lower electric power, and the new servomechanism was developed to make the high responsiveness on practical electric power possible.

PapersDevelopment of a High Speed Non-circular Machining NC-lathe by Electro-hydraulic ServomechanismIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorToshiro HIGUCHI;Tomomi YAMAGUCHI;Ikuo MAEHARA;Kiyoshi SAITOJournal of the Japan Society for Precision EngineeringVol. 56, No. 2, pp. 293-2981990/2~This paper presents a high speed non-circular machining NC-lathe for cutting a piston-head of a reciprocating engine. In the non-circular machining, it is indispensable for a cutting tool to reciprocate in phase with the rotation of the main spindle. This cutting tool positioning mechanism needs high frequency response and high power. So an electro-hydraulic servomechanism was applied to the positioning mechanism, and the non-circular machining NC-lathe was developed. The machining of a piston-head needs higher speed cutting, and so the positioning servomechanism needs higher frequency response because the mass of the cutting tool and the base is too heavy. So the lightening of the mass and the frequency response possible, and the high speed non-circular machining NC-lathe has been newly developed for machining of a piston-head.

PapersStudy of Non-circular Machining (1st Report) - The Application of Inverse Transfer Function Compensation -In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorToshiro HIGUCHI;Tomomi YAMAGUCHIJournal of the Japan Society for Precision EngineeringVol. 54, No.1, pp. 145-1501988/1~This paper describes a newly developed lathe for machining numerical non-circular profile article with high accuracy and high efficiency. In general, the machining of non-circular profile articles, such as camshafts and rotary engines, has conventionally been carried out by means of a copying lathe. This method sets upper bounds to machining speed owing to mechanical factors. In order to machine a non-circular profile object by a lathe with high efficiency, a lathe has been developed whose the cutting tool is positioned in-phase with the rotation of the spindle by the use of an electro-hydraulic servo-mechanism controlled numerically. When the speed of the spindle is increased to improve machining efficiency, the positioning of the cutting tool tends to become out of phase with the rotation owing to the delay caused in the servo-system. The inverse transfer function compensation, which is a kind of feed-forward control, has been applied to the system in order to overcome the problem of the delay. And application of this compensation has enabled improvement in positioning accuracy of 0.5 mm to 0.1 mm at a spindle rotation of 180 rpm. This result and some examples of the products machined by the developed lathe are shown in the paper.

PapersCutting Tool Positioning Control by Periodic Learning Control Method and Inverse Transfer Function CompensationIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorToshiro HIGUCHI;Tomomi YAMAGUCHISystem and ControlVol. 30, No. 8, pp. 503-5111986/8~The machining of an object into a non-circular outline has conventionally been carried out by means of a copying lathe. This method, though reproducible, is time-consuming and necessitates the preparation of a model to be copied. The authors, with a view to improving efficiency and diversity of non-circular machining, have developed a lathe incorporating an electro-hydraulic servomechanism for positioning the cutting tool in-phase with the rotation of the work.
When the rotation of work is increased to improve efficiency, the positioning of the cutting tool tends to become out of phase with rotation owing to the delay caused in the servo-system. The authors have applied periodic learning control method and inverse transfer function compensation to the system, and thus achieved a notable improvement of accurate high-speed positioning for an electro-hydraulic servo-system.
