- My research theme is the characteristics of critical behaviors of space frames. I have been performing experimental and theoretical research concerned with the in-plane-limit which is a new critical point of the behaviors of structures under cyclic loading by heavy earthquake.

The beam-column is subjected to an idealized completely reversed tip-deflection cycling program with continuously increasing amplitude under a constant axial load. Finstly, an analysis method is presented for tracing the steady-state path of the beam-column. Secondly, the steady-state limit of a tip deflection amplitude is found as a limit point of a steady-state path. Finally, the steady-state limits are verified through finite element analyses of hysteretic responses of beam-columns.

Analyses are performed for beam-columns of square cross-section using the incremental perturbation method. In-plane limits of tip deflection amplitude are parametrically calculated for axial force ratios by the application of the in-plane limit theory. Accuracy of those limits is verified by hysteretic response analyses for the beam-columns. Out-of-plane deformation is exponentially increased under an amplitude in excess of the in-plane limit.

empirical methodIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorMASUI Takeshi;TAKEMURA/Masayuki;KAMATA/MasakiJournal of the seismological society of Japan, second seriesVol. 47, No. 4, 375−3821994/1~Accelerograms from the 1993 Noto-hanto-oki earthquake(MJMA=6.6)are simulated at four sites with different ground conditions by using a semi-empirical method for modeling the earthquake faulting stochastically. Seismic moment M0 and fault plane for the main shock are determined from a tsunami source model. Two element events, whose focal mechanisms are similar to that of the main shock, are selected among four large aftershocks of MJMA=5.0-5.1. Source spectra of these events follow the -2 model and their corner frequencies fCE are equal to or higher than those expected from the M0-fc relation by BOORE(1986). Synthesized records are in good agreement with observed ones in both cases of using these element events on the condition that standard deviations SD of displacement on the fault plane are assumed to be about five times as large as those for other large events whose source spectra follow the -2 model. The higher value of SD suggests that high frequency components of seismic waves were strongly excited due to some large heterogeneity of displacement on the fault plane of the main shock. This result is also supported by the fact that maximum accelerations from this event observed at stations within an epicentral distance of 200 km are systematically larger than those from the 1984 Nagano-ken-seibu earthquake(MJMA=6.8), which has almost the same seismic moment as this event.

Based on this concept, an efficient numerical method is proposed for inversely sweeping out an ordered set of earthquake-strain constrained design functions with respect to a parameter which spcifies a sequence of design strain functions. The process of sweeping out the designs is first formulated with Gateaux differentiation of the implicit nonlinear mapping. All the governing equations and the inverse mapping are discretized by the Rayleigh-Ritz method in the numerical procedure. With this method, a set of candidate designs and various design charts may easily be supplied for designers. In the examples, several ordered sets of earthquake response corvature constrained beams with various support conditions are generated, and the characteristics of the designs are discussed.
