PapersOn the Theory of Architectural Evolution by Chuta Ito II. The Significance and the EffectIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHASHITERA Tomoko;Rintaro Kawamichi;;Meiji era;architectural theory;Chuta Ito;Journal of Architecture, Planning and Environmental EngineeringNo.554, pp.305-3102002/4/30~The aim of the enunciation of ”The theory of architectural evolution” by Chuta Ito in 1907 was to propose the ”Evolutionalism” in architecture. It is a design method for the creation of architectural style of Japan on the basis of Japanese architecture in the past. It was criticized by architects who stood for rationalism or modernism. But, they also had high regards for the traditional architecture of Japan, and made efforts toward expression of Japanese characteristic in the modern building. Japanese pavilion at the Paris Expo of 1937 designed by Junzo Sakakura and a series of works by Kenzo Tange in the 1950's were highly evaluated on the international stage. Their design method was also similar to Ito's method of ”Evolutionalism”, even though there were some differences between their manners of application of the traditional ones.

Under the Meiji new government, some modern and western style buildings that were for the education, medicine and the military were built in a few years immediately after the Meiji Restoration. This paper shows their buildings that were built in the old site of the Osaka Castle.

PapersOn the Theory of Architectural Evolution by Chuta Ito I. The Origin and the history of the TheoryIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHASHITERA Tomoko;KAWAMICHI/Rintaro;Tenshin Okakura;Meiji era;Japanese architecture;architectural theory;Chuta Ito;Journal of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Engineering (Transactions of AIJ)1999/11/30~Chuta Ito enunciated an architectural theory in the lecture of “The future of Japanese architecture from the view point of principles of architectural evolution" in 1908. The theory has been considered to be the first one on the architectural creation in modern Japan. The present author presents some new facts or interpretation as to the origin and the history of the theory as follows. The popular view of the theory which was originated from the Spencer's theory of social evolution is not necessarily correct. The theory was originated from Ito's own “The Architectural Philosophy" of his graduation thesis. Ito made the theory by succeeding to Kingo Tatsuno's discourse and by referring to Tensin Okakura's essays and opinion of Japanese fine art.Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research 199704-199903

PapersJapanese Equivalents for "STYLE"in Architecture in the Meiji EraIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHASHITERA Tomoko;KAWAMICHI/Rintaro;Journal of Architecture,Planning and Environmental Engineering(Transactions of AIJ)1995/11/30~'Style' was one of the new and important concepts in the Meiji era when the Western architecture was actively introduced into Japan. Japan had had several words which partially conveyed the concept of 'style', but had not the same word. This paper discusses the process of reception of the concept through the investigation of Japanese equivalents for 'style'. At the end of Meiji era, the word 'yoshiki' became generally to be used as a Japanese equivalent for 'style' just as we use it today. But before that, traditional Japanese words, like 'yo', 'shiki', 'fu', 'ryu', 'ha', had been used as equivalents for 'style' at the same time. Some writers used them each in its proper way according to the meaning of 'style' in the context.
PapersThe Introduction of the Concept of Taste into Itoh's Theory of Architectural Style in the Meiji Era -The Concept of "Nihon-shumi(Japan-taste)" Used on Japanese Modern Architecture Part III-In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHASHITERA Tomoko;KAWAMICHI/Rintaro;Journal of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Engineering(Transactions of AIJ)1993/8/30~This paper traces the source and the basic idea of the concept of "Nihon-shumi (Japan-taste)". Chuta Itoh dealt with architectural style in his graduation thesis of the 25th year of Meiji. He discussed the connection between architectural style and taste, and defined architectural style by using the concept of "national taste" in it. Itoh quoted the word "national taste" which Fenollosa and others had used in their books, and conceptualized it by making use of the concept of taste in the field of psychology and aesthetics. The concept of "Nihon-shumi" originated from this Itoh's idea, and was founded on the basis of the idea which defined architectural style in connection with taste.
BookA Study on the Formation of Concept of ”Nihon-shumi(Japan-taste)” in the Meiji EraIn refereedOtherSingle-AuthorHASHITERA Tomoko;1993/3~The word ”architecture of Nihon-shumi (Japan-taste)” indicates the architecture representing Japaneseness by the manner that gives traditional motifs of Japanese wooden architecture to the body of modern building. It has been commonly used after the Taisho era by getting the common image and recognition of it through the works that were designed for representing Japaneseness among the architectural competitions and the real buildings. Although the manner of ”architecture with Nihon-shumi” was not yet established in the Meiji-era, the word ”Nihon-shumi” was often used in the discussion on future Japanese architectural style. This paper traces how the concept of ”Nihon-shumi” formed in the Meiji era.
PapersOn the Manner for Representing "Nihon-shumi(Japan-taste)"Argued at the End of Meiji Era -The Concept of "Nihon-shumi(Japan-taste)" Used on Japanese Modern Architecture Part II-In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHASHITERA Tomoko;KAWAMICHI/Rintaro;Journal of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Engineering(Transactions of AIJ)1993/2/28~The word "architecture of Nihon-shumi(Japan-taste)"indicates the architectures which represent Japaneseness by the manner that gives traditional motifs of Japanese wooden architecture to the body of modern building. This word has been commonly used after the Taisho-era by getting the common image and recognition of it through the works which were designed for representing Japaneseness among the architectural competitions and the real buildings. In the Meiji-era, the manner of "architecture with Nihon-shumi" was not yet established. This paper treats the manners which were discussed at the end of Meiji-era for representing the "Nihon-shumi (Japan-taste)" on architecture. And here, it is demonstrated that some manners which are different from the manner of "architecture with Nihon-shumi" were argued at the end of Meiji-era as well as the similar ones of it.
PapersOn the Word "Nihon-shumi(Japan-taste)" Used in the Meiji Era -The Concept of "Nihon-Shumi" Used on Japanese Modern Architecture Part I-In refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHASHITERA Tomoko;KAWAMICHI/Rintaro;Journal of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Engineering(Transaction of AIJ)1992/2/28~In the history of Japanese modern architecture, the word “nihon-shumi (Japan-taste)" has been commonly used, though the word in present days denotes “Japonaiserie" or “Japanism" as a kind of exoticism. Tenshin Okakura used “Nihon-shumi" in his articles, which meant the taste or flavor peculiar to Japanese arts and things. This word first used frequently in the controversy on the future style of Japanese architecture that was held between Yasuji Otsuka and Chuta Itoh in the 42nd year of Meiji. The concept of “Nihon-shumi" was based on the concept of “national style" which had been discussed from early time about the style of architecture by Chuta Itoh.
