PapersThe Problem of Discoursing in ActivityIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHIRUMA Futoshi;GORDON WELLS;TAMARA BALL;ACTIO: An international Journal of Human Activity Theory1,93-1142007/3~Discourse is a mediating artifact, which, as is increasingly being recognized, plays a central role in activity. The intrinsic features of discourse are that it is emergent, multi-perspectival, jointly constructed. Together, these features suggest that discourse should be treated as a process (i.e. as ”discoursing”). Following SFL and examining our own discussion, we will suggest a way of developing Bakhtin's notion of speech genre in order to capture a dynamic nature of discoursing in a comprehensive account of the various ways in which it functions as a mediating artifact in activity.

PapersThe development and implementation of 'Thinking Together' educational programme for Japanese schoolchildren in lower grades.UnrefereedIn-house publicationCo-authorHIRUMA Futoshi;Ken Wakatsuki;Masamichi Ueno;Kojiro Nabeshima;CHAT Technical ReportsNo.32006~In this paper, we report on the interim results of one of the ongoing projects at our center. The aim of this project is to establish a creative and collaborative learning activity in a Japanese classroom. We are working to achieve this aim by implementing the 'Thinking Together' educational programme (e.g. Mercer, 2000). First, we outline the theoretical background of our project and discuss the implementation process. The results of our quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the focus groups' performances show that the program is effective in facilitating collaborative learning activities during group work. However, the results also suggest that there is room for improvement within the programme, for example, letting children sustain an activity such as exploratory talk. Finally, we discuss the remaining tasks and the future direction of this project.20050401-

The long version of it was translated into Japanese and data was collected from 178 undergraduate students in Japan. The scales were reasonably reliable but a discrepancy in the number of dimensions was found.

PapersFunction of Utterance in explaining action-sequencesIn refereedAcademic JournalSingle-AuthorHIRUMA Futoshi;;;;Japanese Journal of Educational Psychology1993/3/30~In this article, the function of utterance in explaining action-sequences was explored from two different points of view: 1) mutual knowledge and 2) evaluation of the explanation. In the first experiment, two groups of subjects (they were mutually known or unknown) were asked to explain how to fold paper into ”Turu”, and their performances were recorded on videotapes. Then, their utterance was categorized into five classes.
In the second experiment, subjects evaluated those explanations, and the relation between the evaluation and the utterance in the explanations were examined
Results were as follows: 1) Ss, mutually known, produced more abstract utterances; 2) Ss, mutually unknown, gave more additional utterance; and 3) The explanations containing additional utterance were set at high value while those containing unrelated utterance for folding paper were set at low value.

PapersOptimal Design for a Presentation of Action-sequences in a User's ManualIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorHIRUMA Futoshi;Kaiho Hiroyuki;;;;Japanese Journal of Educational Psychology1991/12/30~The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of design was optimal for the presentation of action-sequences in a user's manual of word-processor software. Nine types of designs were constructed, manipulating the presence or absence of a lead, an example, results of the operations and pictures of the screen. The position of the pictures was also a variable. Thirty novice-users and twenty-three technical-writers evaluated each type of design using the semantic differential(SD) method and paired-comparisons. Results were as follows: (a) The most optimal design contained a lead, an example, results of the operations and pictures of the screen.; (b) The presentation of results of the operations showed the most important for the optimization; (c) A few discrepancies between the evaluation of novice-users and that of technical-writers were observed.
