Research Activities
- Research in foreign language education based upon theories in phonetics is my main interest. Other research fields include the mechanism of listening comprehension, the intelligibility of English produced by Japanese students, and more recently, the examination of phonetic features of speech produced by Japanese learners of English with the aid of a computer-assisted acoustic analyzer.

PapersSome Phonetic Characteristics Observed in American Broadcast News: Based Upon Acoustic AnalysesUnrefereedIn-house publicationSingle-AuthorYAMANE,Shigeru2017/10~It is known that speech styles in English vary greatly depending upon the formality level of various speech situations. The formality level of broadcast news as well as public speeches is, in general, considered to be high. Using research conducted with the aid of an acoustic speech analyser called Praat, this paper demonstrates that some phonetic characteristics typically observed in casual speech also appear in American TV news English. By examining both segmental and suprasegmental aspects of broadcast news English, it became clear that 1) such phonetic phenomena as elision, assimilation, nasal release, and linking are quite common in broadcast English, 2) stress-timed rhythm is present in newscasters’ speech, though its isocronism was not confirmed, 3) the use of lower pitch range is relatively stable, while there are variations in the use of higher pitch range, and 4) the pause ratio in news read by American anchorpeople is lower than that in news read by Japanese news announcers.

PapersIn refereedMonographCo-authorYAMANE,Shigeru;2007/2/28~It is said that speech style in English varies greatly depending upon the formality level of the speech situation. The speaking style in casual conversation may be quite different from that used by a TV newscaster, for instance. In this paper, some phonetic and grammatical characteristics observed in TV news English will be analyzed.
PresentationsHow Far Is Japanese English Intelligible?YAMANE Shigeru;2007/2/17~An International Symposium on English Education in Japan:Exploring New FrontiersHow far is Japanese English intelligible? What types of Japanese English should be recommended? Should all errors be avoided? There seems to be a general shift of interest in research on error analysis from the categorization of errors committed by non-native speakers of the target language to the investigation of intelligibility of non-native speakers' speech judged by native speakers. More recent research, however, concentrates more upon how these errors are perceived by the native speakers and which errors impede communication. There are some errors which are relatively more understandable for native speakers and there are other errors which are destructive to communication. The purpose of the present study is to measure the degree of intelligibility of non-native speech when presented to native speakers of English.
PapersThe Effect of Pause on the Listening Process of Japanese EFL LearnersIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorYAMANE Shigeru;Sugai K.;Kanzaki K.;Language Education & Technology44 187-2042007~When EFL learners listen to spoken English, prosodic factors such as rhythm, intonation, pauses, and speech rate have a great influence on their comprehension. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of these prosodic elements on their listening comprehension of Japanese EFL learners. The study examines how the learners' understanding is influenced by such parameters as sentence length, the level of sentence complexity, and pause frequency.
