Academic presentationThe role of noticing in writing-to-learn processCo-authorNABEI,Toshiyo;YOSHIZAWA, Kiyomi2019/8/8~FLEAT 7 International Conference on Foreign Language Education and TechnologyWaseda UniversityWhat actually goes on in L2 learners’ minds, especially what they notice while they engage in language learning activities, is a critical question. In this study, noticing made by high-intermediate Japanese learners of English during a series of L2 writing tasks is explored.
Research questions posed in this study are (1) what L2 learners notice while composing a narrative, (2) what they notice when comparing their originals with reformulated versions, and (3) what changes they make in their delayed re-writing. The students in the experimental group engage in collaborative narrative writing and re-writing along with reformulation feedback. The types and degrees of noticing at three different stages are compared within the group members as well as with a control group who compose and re-write narratives without reformulation feedback.
The analyses indicate that learners’ noticing that appeared and coded in their verbalization has impact on their L2 learning (e.g., Qi & Lapkin, 2001, Swain & Lapkin, 2002); more complex noticing contributes to later improvement in writing.

PapersLearner Awareness of Recasts in Classroom Interaction: A Case Study of an Adult EFL Student's Second Language LearningIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorNABEI Toshiyo;Swain MerrillLanguage Awareness11: 1 pp. 43-632002~This case study is about an adult Japanese learner's second language learning through her teacher's recasts in an EFL classroom in Japan. The findings suggest that recasting is a complex verbal behaviour influenced by the teaching environment, the interaction context, and the learner's cognitive orientation. The effect of recasts is influenced not only by the linguistic elements (e.g., grammatical vs. lexical) of the feedback, but also by paralinguistic elements and the learner's autonomous utilisation of the learning opportunities provided by the feedback.
