PapersThe effect of copper on the multiple carbon nanofilaments growths by the methane decomposition over the oxidized diamond-supported nickel–copper bimetallic catalystIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authored;;;2022/4~https://doi.org/10.1007/s42452-022-05015-xTo clarify the indispensable parameters for the multiple carbon nanofilaments (CNFs) growths, in other words, having a unique Octopus-like morphology consisting of the Marimo-like carbon (MC), we have systematically studied to synthesize the MC by the decomposition of methane using oxidized diamond-supported Ni–Cu bimetallic catalysts. We discovered that a Cu addition of 20 wt.% by weight and a growth temperature in the region of 550 °C to 600 °C resulted in many CNF forms from a single catalyst particle, specifically the "Octopus-like" morphology of CNFs. We also discovered that the several CNFs forms might occur from the carbon dissolved in the sintered catalyst particles. We described a model process of the unique structure formation. We expect that the Octopus-like CNFs growth gives enough space volume in the MC for a mass transfer, consequently, it should contribute to realizing a higher power generation performance of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) although under a higher-voltage generation region.

PapersWater softening during natural flow using electric double layer adsorptionIn refereedAcademic JournalInternational coauthorship;;;;;;;;TANSO2021/4~https://doi.org/10.7209/tanso.2021.65Print ISSN : 0371-5345Hard water is water that contains cations, especially Ca2+ and Mg2+ that can participate in reactions that leave insoluble mineral deposits. These deposits make hard water unsuitable for many uses, and so a variety of methods have been developed to remove these ions. We have attempted to remove them by using the principle of electric double layer adsorption. This system has advantages such as electrode reproducibility and reusability. This report investigates the efficient removal of these ions by electric double layer adsorption and the effectiveness of mesoporous carbon electrodes.
PapersAn enzymatic glucose sensor based on glucose oxidase immobilized cup-stacked carbon nanofilamentsIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-author;;;;;;;TANSO2021/4~https://doi.org/10.7209/tanso.2021.70Print ISSN : 0371-5345Enzymes-based glucose sensors are used as blood glucose sensors in diabetes treatment because of their high selectivity. The enzyme electrode of this sensor was obtained by immobilizing an enzyme on the electrode. However, it is difficult to stabilize an enzyme as a biological material. In this study, glucose oxidase (GOD), an enzyme that degrades glucose, was immobilized on the surface of cup-stacked carbon nanofilaments (CNF) with oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. The formation of an amide bond between the amino group of GOD and the carboxyl group of the CNFs was expected to strongly
immobilize GOD on the CNF surface. The use of CNFs with a large number of carboxyl groups as a support material for enzyme immobilization leads to improved glucose decomposition activity.

International academic conferenceCo-author;2020/10/4~2020/10/9Direct Glucose Fuel Cell (DGFC) is attracting attention as a clean and sustainable energy source because glucose is the most organic substance in nature. In this study, the effect of the mesopores of marimo nano carbon (MNC) on power generation performance for anode material of direct glucose fuel cell was investigated. Three types of MNC with different mesopore distributions were used for the catalyst support material, Pt was used as the supported metal. Also, Vulcan XC-72 which is carbon black of microporous material was used as a comparative material. In the glucose fuel cell performance test, MNC having many pores of about 35 nm showed the highest maximum output density of 0.72 mW cm-2 at 5 wt% metal loading and 0.3 M Glucose. Vulcan XC-72, which was a microporous material had low power generation performance. MNC showed higher power generation performance than that of Vulcan XC-72. The pores of about 35 nm probably promoted ion diffusion and rapid mass transport of reactants and products. These results indicated that MNC was an effective material as anode material for DGFC.

PapersSurface chemical properties of cup-stacked-type carbon nanotubesIn refereedAcademic JournalCo-authorShuhei Toshinari;Kei Kato;Shinya Yoshioka;Katsuhiro Chikuba;Kiyoharu Nakagawa;Hirokazu Oda;TANSO242. 55-592010/4~JapaneseThe physicochemical properties of carbon materials are strongly influenced by the presence of chemical species on the surface.
In this study, surface functional groups on cup-stacked-type carbon nanotubes(CSCNTs)were introduced by gas phase,
liquid phase, and electrochemical oxidations. Several techniques were used to characterize these materials including nitrogen
adsorption, chemical and thermal analyses, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM, and Raman. The results indicated that the amount of
surface functional groups on CSCNTs was strongly affected by the oxidation method. In particular, the electrochemical
oxidation of CSCNTs was effective and increased the concentration of carboxylic acid.
