PapersRe-experiencing: An Interview with Akira IkemiUnrefereedIn-house publicationCo-authoredODAHARA, Kohki;SHIMADA, Ryoya;IKEMI, AkiraThe Understanding of Others;Psychologist: Bulletin of the Graduate School of Clinical Professional Psychology2020/3/20~The purpose of this paper was to gain a deeper understanding of the term ‘Re-Experiencing’ (Nacherleben) which appears frequently in Akira Ikemi’s recent writings on psychotherapeutic theories. The paper summarized Ikemi’s description of ‘Re-Experiencing’ and then reviewed mostly Japanese psychology literature with the keyword “Re-Experiencing” (Tsuitaiken). An inter- view with Ikemi was also conducted, where two points were highlighted which were either newly elaborated or were newly emphasized dimensions of ‘Re-Experiencing’. Ikemi believes that ‘Re-Experiencing’ is an inherent human function and that it emerges when one attempts to understand the other’s experience as it is. In so doing, ‘Re-Experiencing’ opens up to novel inter- subjective realities.

BookIn refereedMonographCo-authored chapterIKEMI,Akira;2013/7/10~This purpose of this paper is to provide an exploration of how one can affect the other to live further. The theoretical articulations of Carl Rogers and Eugene Gendlin are examined on the concept of presence; Gendlin’s terminologies of felt meaning and felt sense are examined; the understanding of the other is viewed from Gendlin’s articulation of crossing. Throughout this paper, the discussion of these person-centered and experiential concepts is staged on the interplay of the pre-reflexive and reflexive modes of consciousness. From these theoretical considerations and examples from Rogers’ and the author’s sessions, the paper concludes that explications from the felt sense of the other can inspire the other to live further.

PapersEmpowering the Implicitly Functioning RelationshipIn refereedAcademic JournalSingle-AuthorIKEMI,Akira;Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies2011/3~This paper discusses the significance of empowering the implicitly functioning relationship, in both its theoretical and practical dimensions. Seven assertions about the process of experiencing are made. Most of these assertions are the author's rendition of Eugene Gendlin's philosophy. Giving examples from Experiential Collage Work and the 'weather inside', the implicitly functioning felt meaning, or implicit understanding is discussed as well as its explication process, where the implicit aspects of experiencing functions together with explicit concepts. The role of reflective listening in the process of explication is discussed, where the author suggests that humans have a "reflective mode of consciousness" which makes reflective listening effective. The importance of reflective listening along with the listener's felt understanding is emphasized, with examples shown from the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo and from the author's therapy transcripts.
